Slipping past Greta was harder than it should be. I exited into a hallway, headed away from the front where she was standing guard, and then out a side door. She should have been in the lobby, but she had a habit of surprising me; and not in a good way. Sheâd taken up a position across the street. The guild house sat at an intersection; so, from the top steps of a butcher shop, she had a commanding view of the front and side doors of the guild. I never would have thought of staking the place out like that, but thatâs how her mind worked.
âYouâve got to be shitting me,â I sighed as she spotted me and made a beeline through the crowd in my direction. Of course, they parted like the Red Sea for someone wearing armor emblazoned with the grand dukeâs crest.
People actually threw themselves out of her way; like if they tripped her up, sheâd take the sword on her back and go all Henry the Eighth on their asses. Even in the Empire, the English king had a reputation for adultery and murder.
I turned and jogged in the opposite direction. My original plan was to âaccidentlyâ lose Greta. I could play the helpless tourist card. The duke and duchess would buy that I didnât know my way around. The latter thought I was a dumbass bumpkin, and it wasnât exactly a lie. The not knowing my way around part, not the dumbass part.
I knew where some stuff was. Iâd chaperoned Erik and Justine on a few outings; but that was mostly to church, the opera house, and the nearest fine dining establishments. None of those places did jackshit to help my business.
Since Iâd already made eye contact with Greta, I couldnât feign getting lost in the work-day shuffle. There was going to be hell to pay, but there was no reward without a little risk. Now, I just needed to make the ass chewing I was going to get worthwhile.
My business was booming, and at the same time, in jeopardy. As I tried to jimmy open the side door of the guild, I had a moment of insight. There was a chance for me to get an advance on some coin to help my current liquidity issues. I might be able to do a half-now-half-upon delivery deal with some entrepreneurs in the empire. That would help finance the Penn deal, and at the same time, replenish my dwindling gold.
It was a potential life saver, but the people I was looking to do business with werenât the kind you fucked around with. Donât get me wrong, they werenât some sinister cabal looking to overthrow the government. At least, I didnât think they were. I was pretty sure they were people like Gilbert. People who were fed up with the way the White God had stifled them; and since they lived in the Old World, there wasnât any chance for them to break out of their funk.
